The pandemic has more people looking for ways to stay fit without setting foot in a gym, and it looks like Peloton is one of the most popular options these days.
The Home Spin Bike, which offers thousands of on-demand and live spin, strength, yoga, and meditation classes, was released quarterly sales reached $ 524.6 million, an increase of 66% over the previous year.
But at a whopping $ 2,245 for the bike and delivery – or $ 2,404 for the bike plus shoes, delivery, bike weights and Headphones – and with delivery waiting times of up to three months, you might be wondering about other ways to make your bike sweat.
The good news is, you don’t have to have peloton-style money to enjoy peloton-style fitness. We have compiled a list of alternatives that will allow your muscles – not your wallet – to work out well.
Here’s how to create a cheaper Peloton alternative
Use the app
A monthly Peloton membership is $ 40, but the price for the app alone is $ 13 per month. The app offers essentially the same experience as a membership. The difference is that the users of the app cannot see their place in the ranking.
Use your app on your phone, tablet or any other device and pop it on any bike. You can also stream it to your TV on Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku, and Android TV.
Costs: $ 13 / month
Combine the app with a cheaper bike …
Choosing the right bike as a peloton alternative is crucial. There are many brands of Spinbikes available right now, and they all seem to be seeing and doing the same thing.
Spoiler alert: you don’t.
You could get a really inexpensive bike – some are as low as $ 100 – but the bikes could be stiff, prone to breakage, or uncomfortable, and might not be able to read your metrics.
Since you’ll likely be spending many hours each week on this bike, you’ll want a solid alternative. Remember: a bike that injures you while riding is a bike that you are unlikely to ride at all.
By far the most popular choice is this Sunny bike. At $ 390, it’s still relatively cheap, especially when compared to the peloton. It even looks like the peloton and you can adjust the resistance. The wheel is sleek and has wheels that make it easy to maneuver around your home.
The Sunny exercise bike isn’t flimsy, while many of the other spinbikes in this price range jiggle and feel similar to spinbikes you’ll find in most standard gyms. This bike should take about half an hour to put together, or you can pay to have someone assemble it for you.
Costs: $ 390 (when you get the Sunny bike)
… Or use the bike you already have
If you already own a bike, you’re in luck! With a simple attachment, you can turn your outdoor bike into a stationary spin bike.
The Sportneer Magnetic Bike Trainer Stand turns any bike into a spin bike. It also reduces the noise from your bikes so it should be just as quiet as a spin bike. The stand has six resistance settings that you can control from the handlebars.
When you’re done, you can fold the attachment and store it in the closet, and your bike is ready to hit the road again.
Costs: $ 140
Buy some sensors for your ride
During the peloton lesson, the instructors will ask you to adjust your cadence and resistance. This is key to getting involved in spin classes and getting great workout.
However, many of the Spinbikes – including Sunny – don’t come with the sensors you need. Fortunately, they are easy to buy and install.
The cadence sensor is a must have so you know how heavy you are. (It’s the difference between driving on a flat road and driving uphill.) Wahoo cadence sensor costs $ 40 on Amazon and goes really well with most Spin bikes, including the Sunny bike.
It’s also nice to have a speed sensor so you know how far you’ve gone. You can usually find speed and cadence sensors bundled together this one from Wahoothat can be bought for $ 70.
Costs: Between $ 40- $ 70
Find an app for speed and cadence
Since your Peloton app doesn’t show you your speed and cadence, you’ll need another app to connect to your bike that will show you all of your exercise stats. Ideally, you want to know your cadence, speed, calories burned, distance and time.
The above sensors can collect all of this data for you. However, with the app, you actually know what the data is telling you. Most sensors should come with an app. So when you buy those from Wahoo, you get the Wahoo Fitness app, which is free and connects to the sensors wirelessly.
Set up your tablet or TV
You can always use your phone for your peloton workouts, but if you have a tablet you can prop it up on your spin bike so it truly mimics a peloton. Any tablet will do, but a bigger screen is better because that way you really get an immersive experience. If you don’t have a stand for your tablet, you may want to invest in one.
You can also put your bike in front of a TV and log into your Peloton app using Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku, and Android TV.
Costs: It depends on what you already have
You don’t need to have these accessories to get a good peloton-style workout. However, if you have extra cash, this is an accessory that should be invested in.
Cycling shoes and cleats
Some bikes, like the Sunny, come with adjustable toe cages that allow you to carry your sneakers while you ride. But bike shoes will improve your game; Their stiff soles offer maximum strength and the shoes themselves are light. You will find that with a good pair of cycling shoes you can ride faster and harder.
There is a wide selection of cycling shoes on the market and you can really choose the range based on what you want to spend. Be aware, however, that cycling shoes can be expensive, and even a solid, affordable pair – like that Nike SuperRep Cycle – could set you back $ 120. However, if you are really into indoor cycling, this investment should be considered.
You will also need some tools to make the bike compatible with studded cycling shoes. The Shimano SH-56 SPD cleats with multidirectional release will do the trick for $ 15.
Many people like to wear cycling shorts when turning because they are flexible, comfortable and have extra padding on the underside. This Cycling shorts from Old Navy is $ 17 for two pairs, so you won’t have to spend a lot on expensive cycling shorts to turn them around.
If your bike seat is uncomfortable, see if you can get used to it in a few days. If not, you can add a bike seat cover like that Schwinn Ultra Comfort bicycle seat, that’s $ 25 on Target.com. Or grab these bike shorts ($ 17 for two at Oldnavy.gap.com).
