SARASOTA, Florida – Sarasota commissioners unanimously voted Monday to spend nearly $ 4 million on body cameras for police officers.
The money will be used to buy 122 cameras that are automatically activated when an officer draws his weapon. An activated camera also turns on the cameras of the other officer nearby.
“It will be able to gather evidence. It will defend cops on the street. It will allow us to see if our cops need additional training,” said Bernadette DiPino, Sarasota Police Chief.
Chef DiPino says this is an effort to hold everyone accountable.
“I think the more we can see what is happening, the more questions will be answered. It’s about transparency and that’s what our community wants, expects, and what we’ve always had as our mission,” said DiPino.
The boss says they are expected to use the cameras next July.
