ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – There are currently two separate Job Connection Centers in Goodwill branches in St. Petersburg and Riverview. A third location is expected to open in Hillsborough County in the coming weeks.
For many it is Job Connections Center is a great resource to get help with your resume, cover letter, interview skills, or simply learning to navigate the internet by searching for jobs or applying for unemployment insurance.
“I believe in the mission of goodwill to change lives through lifelong learning and the power of work. It is very true,” said Raymond Steward, an employment specialist at Goodwill. “And when we help each individual and find out that they have a job or even our unemployment benefit that has been fulfilled. Especially at this time when money is tight for many individuals and families. So it’s a very rewarding job every person who we help and who is willing to seek help highlights my day. “
Steward is an Air Force veteran who proudly served in the armed forces for a decade. He uses his skills as a veteran to give others the confidence to believe in themselves.
“We just need to identify their skills that we know everyone has and just pull them out and put them on this résumé so they can market themselves to this potential employer and company,” said Steward.
You can visit any of the locations at 2550 34th Street N., St. Petersburg and 10739 Big Bend Rd., Riverview. Or if you prefer to stay at home, the program is also online.
“How great is it to have this program in the community to help people who need work now and they need that help?” ABC Action News reporter Michael Paluska asked Ceylin Brooks.
“On a scale of one to ten, at least 15, it’s fantastic,” said Brooks. “I love it. I find it super helpful because there are some things that seem commonplace when looking for a job, but some people just don’t know them.”
Brooks is studying computer engineering in college and had to find a part-time job. She went to a center and said it helped her get hired.
“Raymond actually helped me a lot by piggybacking the keywords in the job description versus what was on my resume,” said Brooks. And I feel like getting the job I have now made a huge difference. “
For anyone struggling to find work, she has this advice.
“Don’t be discouraged, keep searching and do extra work on your interviewing skills,” said Brooks. “Don’t give up. Because just as they try to see if you are a good fit, you are trying to see if this job suits you, wherever you are in your life.”
