HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Florida – Getting around downtown Tampa just got a little easier.
HART launches the first autonomous vehicle in Tampa Bay – the HART SMART AV.
“We can lower the poverty rate. We can reduce income inequality here in the Tampa Bay area if we expand transit, “said 14th Congresswoman Kathy Castor, Congressmanth District of Florida.
Hillsborough Area Regional Transit has partnered with BEEP to bring the self-driving vehicle onto the Marion Street Transitway in downtown Tampa.
“The shuttle will share the transit line with buses during operating hours. 6 am to 10 am and 3 pm to 7 pm with four stops along the way, ”said HART Chair Mariella Smith.
There is no steering wheel, but an autonomous specialist is always on board. It’s free to the public, but you have to wear a mask. The eco-friendly shuttle is 100% electric and costs less than $ 30 a month. It is equipped with eight external sensors.
“These vehicles react ten times faster than a human to a given obstacle,” said Joe Moye, CEO of BEEP.
The Florida Department of Transportation is funding the project, which has received a $ 1 million grant. The autonomous shuttle will open to the public on Monday October 12th.
