The United States reported more than 69,000 new coronavirus cases on Friday, the highest daily number the nation has reported since late July.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the US has reported more than 8 million Covid-19 cases and at least 218,600 deaths since the pandemic began.
The surge in coronavirus cases comes as Infectious disease experts warn US could face a “significant third wave” of infections further aggravated this winter by the spread of seasonal influenza, which is causing many symptoms similar to coronavirus.
As colder temperatures set in in the northern hemisphere, more people will spend time indoors and likely not follow public health guidelines, putting the cornoavirus at higher risk for the spread of the cornoavirus compared to outdoor activities. Dr. William Schaffner, an epidemiologist at Vanderbilt University, said.
According to a CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins data, an average of 55,000 new coronavirus cases are reported daily in the US, based on a weekly average to smooth the coverage. This is an increase of more than 16% compared to a week ago. New cases increased 5% or more in 38 states as the number of infections continues to rise in the Midwest.
“We need to pay more attention to this. We seem to forget that we are making progress, that we are better, and then we let go and go back,” said Dr. Carlos del Rio, professor at Emory University’s medical school specializing in infectious diseases, told CNBC on Friday.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading expert on infectious diseases, has been warning of the daily number of new cases for weeks has remained “unacceptably high” on the way to the end of the year. However, it is not too late to “apply vigorously” recommended Public health actionsFauci told Johns Hopkins University Thursday how to wear a mask and maintain a physical distance from others.
When the US fell from its first peak in April, the number of new coronavirus cases “stuck” around 20,000 a day, Fauci said. Ideally, the US would have reported fewer than 10,000 cases each day, he said.
Then the falls reappeared. The number of new Covid-19 cases every day rose to nearly 70,000 cases a day before subsiding again. However, since then, new cases have ranged between 40,000 and 50,000 cases per day.
“You cannot enter the cool months of autumn and cold months of winter with a high infection base in the community,” said Fauci. He added that the rate of positivity, or the percentage of tests that are positive, is “going in the wrong direction” in more than 30 states.
