The Los Angeles Dodgers are credited with increasing the prices of resale tickets for the limited 2020 World Series.
After the Dodgers recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the National League Championship Series of Major League Baseball against the Atlanta Braves, World Series ticket resale prices rose to $ 1,600 to $ 17,000 per seat, according to data Playtime and SeatGeek. The Dodgers last won the World Series in 1988.
Gametime is a last minute ticket resale app. According to Brad Griffith, CEO of Gametime, it offers users the best ticket prices based on historical stadium transactions. Griffith said demand for tickets has increased 21% since the Dodgers’ NLCS victory.
Due to Covid-19, MLB is using Texas Rangers’s new ballpark, Globe Life Field, as a bubble-like location for the Dodgers-Tampa Bay Rays series. MLB hopes to receive some of the expected loss of revenue due to the pandemic. The state of Texas allows up to 50% capacity for professional sporting events.
Rough 11,500 tickets were available for every game of the World Series. Tickets are sold in sets of 4 due to the stadium social distance guidelines. However, after-market sites like SeatGeek offer tickets to Game One in pairs.
Griffith said the amount of tickets available and the neutral side didn’t hold back demand. He added that buyers could seek a once-in-a-lifetime experience by competing in a limited World Series.
“It will be a fascinating experience to be a part of it,” said Griffith.
On Monday, the value per seat for Tuesday’s first game hit over $ 5,000, up from $ 3,128 last week for Gametime, Griffith said. In the evening, tickets on the Gametime website showed a drop in interest in Game One, with the most expensive tickets priced at just over $ 4,000.

In comparison, inexpensive seats cost about $ 500, up from about $ 224 per seat for the potential Braves-Rays series.
Griffith said tickets are in line with historical prices when compared to Gametime ticket prices for Game One of the World Series 2018 ($ 413 per seat) and 2019 ($ 528 per seat).
The most expensive seat cards cost more than $ 20,000 when the series spans seven games. The most expensive Game Two tickets hit over $ 3,000 per seat on Monday night. Gametime estimated the remaining prizes:
- Game three: $ 2,668 (most expensive seat – $ 3,627)
- Fourth game: $ 2,142 ($ 6,803)
- Fifth game: $ 2,054 ($ 2,857)
- Sixth game: $ 1,473 ($ 2,188)
- Game Seven: $ 484 ($ 21,776)
Griffith said that games two and three, if no winner is determined, are “the best ways to get value”. He added that the app is best for last-minute shoppers who choose to participate within four hours of the game starting, and that he’s been encouraged by the increased demand for MLB and National Football League games.
Based in San Francisco, Gametime was founded in May 2013 and has raised approximately $ 40 million. Investors include co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, David Blitzer.
