DoorDash announced Friday that it is partnering with Sam’s Club to offer same-day delivery service for prescription drugs to patients in the United States.
The deal includes 500 Sam’s Club locations in 41 states and will be implemented through Drive, the platform DoorDash offers to companies looking to integrate delivery into their own platforms. In this case, customers who want to access the service must request it directly through the wholesale club, as well as through members and non-members of Sam’s club can use same day delivery.
DoorDash chief operating officer Christopher Payne said expanding beyond food delivery has always been part of the company’s mission, but the pandemic has underscored the urgency of same-day delivery.
“It was definitely earlier on the roadmap, the vision was that. In many ways, I think DoorDash was made for that scenario,” Payne said. “The delivery of pharmaceuticals is not convenient today. This means that we can now use the logistics system we built with DoorDash Drive and bring it to your door.”
The deal marks DoorDash’s first major pharmaceutical partnership of its kind.
The move is the latest in a rapidly changing post-pandemic landscape for same day delivery platforms such as DoorDash, Instacart and Postmates that is currently being taken over by About. With Covid-19-related lockdowns closing many small businesses this spring, delivery companies are looking to meet the needs of domestic customers looking for immediate delivery of groceries, staples, and retail goods, and local businesses to provide a contactless channel for sales of their inventory.
“You are seeing this moving at an accelerated pace, partly caused by the pandemic. You can imagine that not many customers want to go out and now they don’t have to. You can stay home and get that real-time pharmaceutical delivery, too.” brought them home, “said Payne.
Just this week, Postmates announced that it would Testing a new retail channel in Los Angeles Same day delivery of clothing, household, beauty and wellness items. This month Instacart partnered with Sephoraand DoorDash has a new deal with Macy’s Same day delivery via the retailer’s online platform from 500 Macy’s and Bloomingdale stores across the country. The three delivery companies recently dealt with convenience and drug stores like 7-11, Walgreens, and CVS Deliver household items. Expanding partners beyond restaurants and grocery stores is also an important issue Amazon Main buyer.
Recent data from Edison Trends shows that DoorDash expanded its lead in grocery delivery transactions in September, taking 48% of the market, compared to Uber Eats and Postmates’ combined 35% share and a 14% year-over-year increase.
However, as the delivery room shifts quickly and companies add new partners, DoorDash is always looking ahead, according to Payne.
“This is not about focusing on what Competitor X or Competitor Y is doing,” Payne said. “We have so many opportunities ahead of us and our strategy has been around since day one. I think what drove us to market leadership was following the conversation with our trading partners.”
