World Health Organization officials hold a press conference on Friday to inform the public about the coronavirus outbreak, which has infected more than 88.2 million people around the world, as governments struggle to introduce vaccines.
The briefing comes as the United States announces its deadliest day of the pandemic yet More than 4,000 people die in one day. All over the world, governments have secured the doses of the vaccines manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer– –BioNTech race to get shots fired as soon as possible.
WHO officials and immunologists around the world are closely monitoring the genomic sequence of the virus as new variants spread in some parts of the world. A strain first discovered in the UK has spread to the US and other countries, although it has not yet finally taken hold outside the UK.
Another strain, first spotted in South Africa, worries experts that vaccines and certain Covid-19 treatments may not be as effective against this strain as others.
