Big snowstorm hits northeast, causing shutdowns and blackouts

The first big snow storm by 2021 is underway, with power outages in New Jersey being a state of emergency Declared in 44 counties in New York State, and The biggest snowfall at Chicago O’Hare Airport since 2015.

By noon on Monday, around 1,500 New Jersey customers were without power, Governor Phil Murphy said on twitterto meet with the worst storm yet. Forecasters expect a few more inches in southern New Jersey and at least another meter in the north of the state.

In New York State, snow is expected to fall at a rate of about two inches per hour this afternoon. Areas in the New York City, Long Island, and Mid-Hudson regions could see up to 2 feet of snow by Tuesday morning.

Big airlines have canceled service to most NYC airports, and American Airlines has ceased operations in several affected states, with limited service due to return on Tuesday.

Pennsylvania sees similar snowfall rates, with 2 to 3 inches per hour expected Monday afternoon according to the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday the Biden administration has contacted FEMA and is monitoring the storm.
