Starting a family raises many financial issues for young parents. Responsibility for a little person throws a harsh light on everything you know or don’t know about your finances.
Getting married, buying a house with a partner, or having children are important life changing events that, among other things, remind you to bring your financial activities together.
This often includes buying life insurance so that if you die, your family will not be financially burdened. It also includes a lot more fun thinking steps like building a nest egg and helping the kids prepare for college.
Fabric is an online life insurer that understands all of these financial tasks that go on in the brains of sleep deprived parents. With its unique suite of products, it is intended to be a single point of contact for families to get their finances in order.
Here’s our breakdown of what Fabric has to offer and how to decide if it’s right for you and your family.
What is material life insurance?
Fabric is a Brooklyn-based financial services company specially designed for parents to “start their financial lives”. It offers term life insurance, accidental death insurance, 529 college savings plans, high yield savings accounts, and tools to help couples manage financial accounts.

Fabric is a leader in life insurance, offering additional financial products to help parents and young couples prepare their families for healthy financial futures. Here’s what you get when you sign up.
Term life insurance
Fabric features 10, 15 and 20 year olds Term life insurance Guidelines. Fabric life insurance covers death from accident or illness. All policies exclude death from suicide within the first two years of insurance, which is typical for life insurance.
Immediate underwriting process
In many cases, Fabric can make an eligibility decision without a medical exam and provide you with a quote immediately after submitting an online application.
Fabric uses third-party data providers to verify the information in your application, including Social Security Administration, DMV, and the Medical Information Bureau. The algorithms then determine whether you are eligible to receive an offer, not eligible, or need more information.
If an immediate decision cannot be made, your application will be forwarded to a team of human insurers for further review. When this happens, you may need to answer additional questions, provide your medical records, or schedule a health evaluation.
If you need to take a health exam, you may be able to schedule it online through your Fabric account. If time slots are not available in your region, you will receive a call from Fabric partner APPS paramedical services instead. You don’t pay anything for the exam.
Your life insurance protection begins when you receive your first premium payment.
Money back guarantee & payment deadline
When you sign up for your policy with Fabric, you enter a 31-day “free-look” period. You can cancel your policy at any time during this period and receive a refund of your premium for the first month. You can then cancel your policy at any time without a premium refund.
You pay monthly premiums through automatic card payments. If you miss a payment because of new card information or any other reason, your coverage will remain in effect for a grace period of 31 days to give you time to update your information and stay current.
After 31 days, your coverage will be suspended and Fabric will attempt to collect payment and restore your coverage up to 60 days after the due date before canceling your policy.
Supported by A + rated carriers
Chemical policies are issued by Vantis Life Insurance Company, a Penn Mutual Company, the second oldest mutual life insurance company in the United States. Vantis Life is operated by A.M. rated A +. Ideally, an industry standard valuation where you can rest assured that claims will be paid out.
In addition to term life insurance, Fabric offers Accidental Death Insurance (A.D.) that pays off if you accidentally die, such as in a car accident or fire.
A.D. when paired with term life insurance, could mean a higher payout for your beneficiaries and be attractive when engaging in high-risk activities. Death due to illness or natural causes is not covered by accidental death insurance.
A. D. has no concept. Instead, it’s conditionally renewable, which means you’re covered on a monthly basis for as long as you keep paying premiums. It automatically expires on the policy anniversary closest to your 60th birthday.
Fabric’s accidental death insurance is available in all states and Washington, DC except Colorado, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.
You can’t buy one Life insurance However, you can apply to convert your term life insurance to life insurance without additional underwriting – until you are 65 years old. The price is based on your age when you apply.

Your chemical policies and wills are also automatically stored in the vault so that in the event of your death, your beneficiary can easily access the information they need.

All of Fabric’s financial management tools are available through the mobile app for iOS and Android.
How much does it cost?
The Fabric Vault is free to use to make a will, open a savings account, create a 529 plan, or apply for life insurance.
After your application and before you register, you will receive a life insurance offer that contains your coverage amount and the monthly premium price. Fabric doesn’t list its coverage or premium amounts, but divides these five interest rate brackets you could fall into from lowest to highest based on the risk you pose as a policyholder:
- Ultra Select: You lead a low-risk lifestyle, have excellent health and family histories, and have not used tobacco in the past five years.
- Choose Plus: You lead a low-risk lifestyle, have very good health and family history, and have not used tobacco in the past three years.
- Choose: You lead a low-risk lifestyle, have good health and family history, and have not used tobacco in the past two years.
- Default: You lead a moderate risk lifestyle, have acceptable health and family histories, and have not used tobacco in the past year.
- Tobacco consumer: You lead a moderate risk lifestyle, have acceptable health and family histories, and have used tobacco in the past year.
- Substandard: Your lifestyle, health, family history and / or tobacco use pose a higher risk than “standard”.
The guidelines for accidental death are the same for everyone (but may vary by state):
- $ 6 per month for $ 100,000 coverage.
- $ 15 per month for $ 250,000 coverage.
- $ 30 per month for $ 500,000 coverage.
For and against
Fabric does what few other life insurance companies – or financial institutions – do: respond to customer needs.
It keeps life insurance simple to be easy and, in most cases, quick to register.
Instead of adding complicated life insurance products to its product lineup that most people don’t need, it has instead focused on products that its family-oriented customers need: college savings, rainy day money, and willpower.
It’s not as simple or elegant as some of its competitors in online life insurance, but its holistic approach to family finances sets it apart specifically for parents and young couples – an accomplishment in an environment where every company fights for the same customer that is difficult to achieve.
- One stop shop: Fabric is characterized by a handful of financial products in one place that are specifically tailored to meet the financial needs of young families.
- Accidental death insurance: Buy accidental death insurance to further protect your family if you lead a high risk lifestyle.
- Immediate coverage for some applicants: Request an offer in seconds and fill out your application in a few minutes. If you get an instant quote, you’ll be able to make your first payment and be instantly covered.
- Life insurance: Convert your policy to life insurance at any time for expanded coverage and peace of mind as you get older.
- Fixed premiums: Your monthly premiums do not change during the term of your policy. (It will likely change if you convert the policy to life insurance or buy accidental death insurance.)
- Additional underwriting for some applicants: If Fabric can’t make an immediate quote, you may need to go through an advanced application process, including a medical exam required for some applicants.
- No drivers: A life insurance driver adds coverage or special terms to your policy. Fabric does not offer drivers, although accidental death insurance is a common driver when it comes to term life insurance.
